What you need

An eye pencil in taupe or cool brown and a small smudge brush. A fine angled brush and dark brown eye shadow are an alternative, with a softer powder finish.

Keep your usual base routine. This tutorial focuses on the eyes. The mobile lid means the part of your eyelid that moves when you blink; find it with your eye gently closed, then check the placement looking straight ahead.

The technique, up close

AI placement examples. The pictures illustrate the two key movements; follow the written steps and the directions on your own products.

  1. Start with a sharp enough tipUse an eye-labelled taupe or cool-brown pencil. A broad blunt edge places more product than this look needs.
  2. Make short upper strokesWork along the upper lash roots from the centre toward the outer corner. Leave the waterline bare.
  3. Smudge along the lineUse a small dense brush with short side-to-side movements. Blend along the lash direction, not up toward the brow.
  4. Echo the outer lower thirdUse only the residue on the brush under the outer lower lashes. Do not draw a full circle around the eye.
  5. Check at arm’s lengthIf a solid band is still obvious, soften its upper edge once more. Stop while the lid above it remains mostly clear.

When to stop

The upper lashes look more defined, with mostly bare lid above them. Any lower colour is a short haze at the outer third, not a continuous ring.

If it goes too far

If the band grows too thick, tidy its upper boundary with a clean cotton bud. Keep the remaining colour close to the lashes instead of blending it farther up the lid.

A mistake to avoid

Extending the lower haze to the inner corner changes a quiet eye into a much darker ring. Leave the inner lower area alone.

Make it work for your day

A lighter version

Leave out the lower-lash step and define only the outer half of the upper lash line.

Finish the rest of the face

Keep your normal base and add a rose-beige lip or clear balm. You can stop there; this look does not need another eye shadow shade.

Adapt the colour and placement

If lower-lash colour makes your eyes feel visually heavy, skip that step. The upper-lash version is a complete look on its own.

Products to consider

Check your own makeup first. A product you already own in the right colour and labelled for the intended area may be enough.

Questions

Do I need lower eyeliner for this look?

No. The small outer-lower haze is optional. Keep only the softly defined upper lash line if you prefer less contrast or find lower colour visually heavy.

How can I make this look more subtle?

Leave out the lower-lash step and define only the outer half of the upper lash line.

What can I do if I apply too much colour?

If the band grows too thick, tidy its upper boundary with a clean cotton bud. Keep the remaining colour close to the lashes instead of blending it farther up the lid.
