A sheer plum cheek

Use a small amount of muted plum blush high on the outer cheek and blend its boundary upward. Keep the patch compact so the colour reads as a flush rather than a stripe.

What you need

A muted plum cream blush and small stippling brush, or plum powder blush and a soft blush brush. The two formulas need different brushes; either can give a sheer patch of colour.

Keep your usual base routine. This tutorial focuses on blush placement.

The technique, up close

  1. Choose a cheek-labelled formulaUse a blush intended for cheeks. A purple eyeshadow is not automatically a substitute for this step.
  2. Start with very littleFor cream, pick up a small amount on a stippling brush. For powder, tap off excess before the brush touches your face.
  3. Place above the cheek centreLook straight ahead and begin on the upper outer cheek, clear of the under-eye area.
  4. Blend upward with light pressureUse short tapping movements toward the temple. Keep the strongest colour within a small oval instead of stretching it to the hairline.
  5. Check both sides in daylightCompare intensity, not perfectly identical shapes. Remove excess with the clean brush or sponge used for your base.

When to stop

The colour sits on the outer cheek with a soft boundary. You can still see the skin underneath, and there is no hard stripe pointing toward the temple.

If it goes too far

For too much cream, tap with a clean sponge carrying a little of your usual base. For powder, first soften the edge with a clean soft brush rather than adding more blush.

A mistake to avoid

Dragging a loaded brush from cheek to temple leaves a stripe. Unload the brush first and tap the colour into place.

Make it work for your day

A lighter version

Use only the colour left on the brush after the first light placement. Do not add a second layer.

Finish the rest of the face

Leave the eyes lightly defined and wear a comfortable rose or mauve lip. Keep the cheek free of extra contour while you learn the placement.

Adapt the colour and placement

Plum can be clear on deep skin and very strong on light skin. Adjust the amount and depth; do not choose a paler shade solely because the tutorial model is lighter.

Products to consider

Check your own makeup first. A product you already own in the right colour and labelled for the intended area may be enough.

  • Clinique Cheek Pop: Black Honey Pop

Select Black Honey Pop in the brand’s shade selector, which may initially show Poppy Pop. This powder alternative needs a powder brush; the illustrated cream finish will differ.

Select the named shade and check the product directions before buying.

Questions

Can I follow a cream-blush tutorial with powder?

Use a soft blush brush instead of a fingertip or dense stippling motion. Place a small amount first, then soften the outer boundary with a clean brush. Expect a different surface finish.

How can I make this look more subtle?

Use only the colour left on the brush after the first light placement. Do not add a second layer.

What can I do if I apply too much colour?

For too much cream, tap with a clean sponge carrying a little of your usual base. For powder, first soften the edge with a clean soft brush rather than adding more blush.
