Before and after
Compare the placement and contrast, then use the steps below to try the idea.

AI illustrations of a fictional model, not photographs of a product test. Use them as a colour and placement reference; your result will vary.
What you need
A neutral brown pencil, a sheer neutral or greige lipstick and a narrow lip brush. Choose the centre shade beside your own lips in daylight, not from the trend name alone.
Keep your usual base routine. This tutorial focuses on the lips.
The technique, up close

AI placement examples. The pictures illustrate the two key movements; follow the written steps and the directions on your own products.
- Assess the centre shadeHold a greige swatch near your mouth in daylight. If it turns grey or chalky against your colouring, choose a deeper neutral brown.
- Mark the natural edgeUse short pencil strokes inside the existing border. Connect the corners without extending them.
- Feather inwardWith a narrow lip brush, soften the inner edge of the pencil by a small amount. Leave the outer outline in place.
- Add a sheer centrePress a thin coat of greige lipstick into the centre. Blend it into the pencil without completely covering the darker edge.
- Reduce contrast if neededUse the brush to mix a little of the centre shade into the outline. Stop when it looks intentional with the mouth relaxed.
When to stop
The centre is a little lighter or cooler than the edge, with a gradual transition. Your natural lip depth still shows through instead of being covered by an opaque pale patch.
If it goes too far
If the centre looks grey, blot some off and blend in a touch of a warmer brown lipstick you already own. Keep the inward-blending method even if you change the colour.
A mistake to avoid
A thick pale centre plus an unblended dark ring is a different look. Start sheer if you want this softer version.
Make it work for your day
A lighter version
Choose a centre close to your natural lip colour and use less contrast at the border.
Finish the rest of the face
Use simple taupe or brown eye definition and a small amount of your usual blush. Avoid cooling down the whole face just to match the lip.
Adapt the colour and placement
A greige nude will not read identically on warm, olive and cool colouring. Keep the blending technique and change the depth or temperature to your preference.
Products to consider
Check your own makeup first. A product you already own in the right colour and labelled for the intended area may be enough.
MAC Frost Lipstick: TV Gold
The brand describes this as a cool greige nude. It adds pearl, so expect more reflection than the understated satin version in the AI illustration.
Select the named shade and check the product directions before buying.

The community starting point
The brown-lip community looks and current frost conversation meet here. This tutorial keeps the nineties contrast but favours a softly blended boundary.

Questions
What if greige lipstick looks grey on me?
Choose a deeper or slightly warmer neutral centre and keep the inward-blending technique. A trend name is a starting point, not a reason to use a shade you dislike.
How can I make this look more subtle?
Choose a centre close to your natural lip colour and use less contrast at the border.
What can I do if I apply too much colour?
If the centre looks grey, blot some off and blend in a touch of a warmer brown lipstick you already own. Keep the inward-blending method even if you change the colour.
